Sexual Offender Treatment

restoring community safety

Sexual Offender Treatment (SOT) is a specific therapeutic approach targeting the behaviors associated with behaviors offenses that are classified as sexual offenses per the state law. Many individuals who are convicted of a sexual offense are then required to participate in SOT by court order, supervision condition or other mandate. A sexual offense is not the same as sexually compulsive or addictive behaviors. Some sexually compulsive behaviors may lead to sexual addiction or even sexual offenses.

who is it for?

SOT is available for males, both adult and juvenile (over 13 years old). You can trust that your therapist has extensive training and experience in facilitating this type of treatment; both in a residential setting and community treatment agencies.

Total Wellness 365 is an approved sex offender treatment provider with the State of Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Most often SOT is conducted in a group format and uses multiple styles of interventions, including evidence based curricula (example curriculum).

Each client can expect to be treated with dignity and respect, fostering client autonomy, and to be supported in reaching treatment goals. Therapist are expected to have non-judgmental interactions, maintaining confidentiality with ethical and legal limitations, and to uphold community safety, in- and out- side of group.

What is required to participate?

Prior to participating in SOT each individual must have a completed specific assessments. Once the assessment has been completed, the individualized treatment goals are established and treatment may begin. Each participant will be encouraged to actively develop a deeper understanding of their own choices and develop a plan for success to reduce the risk of reoffense. The success plan will feature coping strategies related to new healthy thinking patterns, emotional regulation and skills for developing or maintaining healthy relationships.

individual therapy sex offending treatment

Whether you participate in group therapy or prefer individual therapy is your choice. We do offer sex offender treatment in individual therapy sessions. The treatment approach is similar as to that of the group, including the development of an individual success plan.

Types of SOT groups

COmprehensive

The focus of the group is to identify the triggers leading to the offense(s), the influence of poor emotional control, the risky thinking that helped the risk behavior(s) continue. Each group cohort will follow the same structure. Below are the objectives that will be met during participation in Sexual Offender Treatment Group: Participant will comprehend the patterns of offense and identify personal high risk situations; Participant will verbalize understanding of thinking errors and their relationship to offending; Participant will incorporate and build healthy support systems that will augment his/her supervision and community transition; Participant will develop an individualized success plan to decrease the likelihood of re-offending and increase a prosocial lifestyle.

AFTERCARE

In order to maintain the skills learned in comprehensive treatment, it’s important to continually practice and review the skills learned. In either a group or individual counseling format, the focus is on maintaining and practice of skills learned by applying the skills to everyday and new risk situations. Completion of comprehensive sex offender treatment is required prior to participation in aftercare.

BRIEF INTERVENTION

Lapse behaviors related to sex offending or violations of conditions of supervision (e.g. possession of pornography, contact with prohibited individuals) are targeted through a review of skills and knowledge learned in prior treatment or an brief introduction to basic skills to prevent lapse/relapse behaviors. Usually offered in a group setting this intervention does not require prior completion of comprehensive SOT to participate. Contact the office to see if options are available for individual sessions.

Family Reunification

Individuals involved in sexually abusive or compulsive behaviors may be required by an attorney, court or supervision authority, to have an assessment prior to returning to live in a home where there are minors. Specialized assessments have been developed specifically targeting the identification of the risk to children to meet these needs. The purpose of these assessments is to identify targets of treatment, level of risk to re-offend, and/or outline expectations for conditions of supervision.

Is there sex offender treatment for women?

Female Sex Offenders (FSO) are not as widely researched as male or juvenile sex offenders. And the numbers tells us why; roughly 5% of those convicted of a sexual offense are female. The characteristics of the FSO are widely different than those of the male sex offender and thus, so must the treatment approaches.

Although Total Wellness 365 does not currently offer FSO treatment groups, individual treatment is available. Contact us for a free consultation.
